Travel to sunny Italy for 5 weeks during the summer of 2008!
Hibbing Community College offers a unique study abroad opportunity in Perugia, Italy. Our host will be the Umbra Institute, an American study abroad facility in the heart of Italy. Students will take two classes while in Italy, travel to places like Assisi, Florence and Rome, and be immersed in Italian daily life.
When: May 22 - June 28, 2008
Where: Perugia, Italy
Perugia is in the center of Italy in the region known as Umbria. It is 100 miles north of Rome, 95 miles south of Florence, and less than 20 miles from Assisi. Perugia’s population is about 175,000, large enough to offer an interesting and varied cultural experience for college students but small enough for students to become comfortable in its environs during the five week stay. With its narrow, winding
streets, terra-cotta roofed stone houses and palazzi, and large piazzas
dominated by churches and other public buildings, Perugia has retained
a medieval appearance while adding modern amenities. The
Universitá di Perugia, the Universitá per Stranieri (for international
students) and the Umbra Institute provide rich and lively cultural
experiences including museum exhibits, concerts and festivals in
addition to a wide variety of academic offerings.Students have the option of taking one or two courses in Italy:
- The required course is NSci 1610 - Galileo and the Revolution in Astronomy (pdf), taught by HCC faculty member Kevin Milani.
- An elective course may also be chosen from the wide selection offered by the Umbra Institute. These courses range from Italian art and history, to dance and painting classes, to Italian language courses (see the summer 2008 courses).
- An elective course may also be chosen from the wide selection offered by the Umbra Institute. These courses range from Italian art and history, to dance and painting classes, to Italian language courses (see the summer 2008 courses).
Students from colleges other than Hibbing Community College should
check with the transfer specialist on their campus to make sure that
any electives taken through the Umbra Institute will transfer for
credit to their college.
Students experience living as young adults in Italy and are integrated
into
the daily life of the city. They live in their own apartments
(selected and coordinated by the Umbra Institute) located throughout
the city. Anywhere from 2 to 6 students are housed in each
apartment. All accommodations are within a short distance of
classes. Meals are prepared at home or can be purchased at three
university cafeterias or in the many excellent restaurants, trattorias,
and cafes found in Perugia.To participate, students;
- must be 18 years of age before the date of departure for Italy.
- must have a valid passport.
- must provide proof of insurance.
- must agree to abide by the HCC Student Code of Conduct.
It is also suggested that students have taken at least one semester of college coursework.
Cost: One Course - $3500 Two Courses - $4100
The cost includes - Tuition, housing, travel to and from the
airport in Rome to Perugia. orientation, some excursions, Institute

However, if we have eight or more students signed up, we will commit to going to Italy! (Important: see the next section regarding air travel) This commitment comes with certain financial obligations on the part of Hibbing Community College, therefore, if you should decide to withdraw from the program AFTER Jan. 15, 2008, the $1000 you have paid becomes NON refundable.
March 15, 2008 is the next deadline, when the balance, either $2500 if you're taking one course, or $3100 if you're taking two courses, is due.
April 20, 2008 is the last deadline. This is the date when Umbra Institute must pay $500 deposits for our housing. Don't worry, you don't owe any more money, however, if you withdraw from the program after this date, a TOTAL of $1500 is NON refundable. Upon arrival in Italy, no refund is available.
