Hibbing Community College Study Abroad Program

Our program consists of a variety of Multicultural Studies course options. The courses allow students to study and travel to countries around the world and earn credits that can be used to complete general education requirements. Hibbing Community College has courses of study/travel to following countries: England/Ireland, France, Germany/Austria/
Switzerland, Italy and Greece.

Each course has specific requirements. Each course has an educational and travel component. A course tour is selected by the HCC Group Leader, publicized and marketed Fall & Spring semesters of each academic year. The course is then offered during Summer session. The travel component of a course generally takes place the last week of May thru first week of June.

Answers to General Questions

  1. Is it safe to study abroad? The courses offered by HCC are all in countries that are deemed safe by the State Department. Any changes will be reflected in the itinerary of the program. In the event that a program is cancelled because of unsafe conditions, a full refund will be given to all participants.

  2. What subject areas are available to study while I am abroad? On several of the programs you directly enroll at the University and are able to take any courses offered. While our language programs are setup to improve the language skills of the participants, still other programs have a specific content area, or change form year-to-year depending on faculty in attendance. Stop by the office or call for more information.

  3. How will the credits be applied on my HCC transcript? Credits taken abroad can be applied to your major, minor, elective, or general education requirements. By filling out the Academic Advisor approval form prior to departure, you will set up how credits will be applied to your transcript once grades are reported.

  4. Do I need to speak a foreign language to study abroad? HCC offers both language based courses for credit or thru Continuing Education. You may receive an introduction to the language as part of your course.

  5. What travel opportunities are available? Our courses include cultural, educational and travel components in the host country or countries.

  6. What types of living accommodations are available? Best rated hotel accommodations in the host country are selected by the tour company used.

  7. What if HCC doesn't have a course I want? If we do not have a course that interests you, many options are open to you through other in our Northeast Higher Education District of Community Colleges. The only requirement is that the program you wish to go on is accredited. Visit an HCC Counselor or Advisor for more information.

Financial Questions

  1. Does financial aid apply to study abroad programs? Yes! Any financial aid awards (scholarships, loans, grants) can be applied to cover the cost of the program. In some cases students on HCC programs are even eligible to collect work study while they are abroad. Usually this means that they act as an assistant to the group leader.

  2. I am not a Hibbing Community College student. Can I apply my financial aid to the program fee? Yes! Contact your home school's Financial Aid Office to arrange a consortium agreement. Also contact your school's Student Services office to check on other requirements that they may have for you.

  3. Where can I get the money to pay the costs that are due before my financial aid can be applied to my program fee? There are a few options for making the payments prior to the travel component departure date (usually paid in three or more installments of $400+). You can make payments in cash, check, or use a credit card. If you personally cannot cover the cost, check with family members or friends. If you anticipate receiving financial aid to cover the program fee, any excess financial aid can be used to pay this source back. Another suggestion is to take out any financial aid that you did not previously accept during the semester preceding your study abroad program. For example, this means that if you were awarded $5,000 in financial aid for fall semester and you initially only accepted $3,000, you can go back and accept the remaining financial aid.

  4. What scholarships are available to students studying abroad? The HCC Study Abroad Program offers the Study Abroad Scholarship to Hibbing Community College students. The scholarships or stipends are limited to HCC students who are studying abroad who demonstrate financial need and submit an essay. Several scholarships or stipends are awarded prior to the tour, with an average award amount of $500.00. In addition, SAP offers additional scholarship opportunities which are available thru the Financial Aid office. Another place to look for scholarships is within your major department. Scholarships for study abroad are also available through non-HCC organizations. Visit any of the following sites on the internet to get more information:

  5. What are the cancellation fees that apply to withdrawing from a study abroad program? Students will be responsible for paying any unrecoverable costs that have been paid by the Study Abroad Program or the tour agency used for the travel component. The student must abide by the tour company regulations.

  6. What does the program fee cover? The program fee covers hotel lodging, two meals per day, roundtrip airfare, cultural excursions and events, and general administrative costs. HCC tuition and fees are additional. Please refer to the specific program information for more details.
