Director Notes

Once again, we are nearing the end of another wonderful, adventure-filled season of shows here at HCC Theatre, with our curtain going up on one of the most successful of the Andrew Lloyd Weber/Tim Rice collaborations ever. This is the duo responsible for "Evita" and "Jesus Christ Superstar", but it is a little known fact that "Joseph" was their very first attempt at writing a musical together. It was done as a graduation excersise for a private English school in 1968, and it was all of fifteen minutes long.Owing to the reception the pieces received, Weber and Rice decided to keep working on it, on and off, over the course of the next dozen years, expanding the work to its current length. It did not open on Broadway until 1982 years after "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" had gained international recognition for them. Simply told, they took the well-known Bible story of Joseph and his coat of many colors, and re-told it in such a way that it would be fun and accessible for their young audiences. The fact that it has become an international sensation, (re-introducing Donny Osmond to modern audiences), it a testament to the popularity and appeal of this engaging musical.

In working on this production, I have found once again, that it takes many fine people to put something of this magnitude together and make it work as well as it does. First of all, we have the largest cast of any show since I have been here - over 40 people, and they have come from far and wide to be a part of this magical experience. Coupled with our backstage crew, builders, painters, sewers, box office helpers and other community supporters, the number swells to over 100. With this kind of effort, it is easy to see how our college theatre has become an integral part of the cultural life of this community.

I owe a great debt of gratitude to many people who were instrumental in making this a very special production. First, to my wife, Ellie, who designed and created yet another magnificent set - thank you for always being there to support me throughout our adventures. To Dorothy Simkins, whose tireless energy and commitment to success makes every one around her better; Dan Dolinar, who has become an invaluable part of the backstage magic he helps to create; to Chris Milani, who is as gifted and talented an artist as I've ever worked with, for his inspired work as musical director and coach; to Bonnie Fiori, whose dedication to teaching this difficult score has created a wonderful chorus of voices; to Kelly Rintala for helping the cast find the dancer hiding in each one of them; to Joe Gibbon for his musical expertise and always tasteful guitar work; to Amy Jaynes and Paul Hanson whose musicianship is always exactly what is needed; to Shelly Nowak for keeping it all together; and to the wonderful cast and crew and parents of all the children - thank you for all your time and hard work.

I would also like to thank two organizations that have heloed enormously this past season, the McKnight Foundation, who provided us with a grant to purchase new lighting equipment; and the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, who helped us fund the Guthrie Theatre production of "Molly Sweeny", and the Minnesota Dance Theatre preformance. Without their support, we would not be able to offer the variety and quality of work that I feel is important to the community. Lastly, (but certainly not least) I would like to thank you, our audiences for your continued support of HCC Theatre. Theatre is indeed a collaboration - the most one being performers and audience. You are indeed a part of something very special when you are seated with your neighbors in a darkened theatre. Let the magic begin...
