Post Season Honors
Congratulations to Melissa Nyberg and Kelly Hams for being given post-season honors. Nyberg, a freshman forward from Hibbing, was named to the Second Team All-North Division and the MACA All- State Second Team. Hams, a sophomore from International Falls, was named to the All-North Division third Team. Congratulations ladies!
HCC loses to Vermilion
The HCC Women's Basketball Team lost 46-69 to Vermilion CC on Saturday, Feb. 20 at Ely, MN. It was a tough first half for the Cards as cold shooting put only 17 points on the board in the first half. The Cardinals shot 11% from the field and it seemed like nothing would go in the hoop. The team came out and fought hard in the second half scoring 29 points to Vermilion's 30 points but the damage was done in the first half. The Cardinals wer 14 of 68 from the field (20%) while Bermilion made 23 of 65 for 35%. Scoring for Hibbing: Kelly Turk 16 points, Nicole Nyberg 10, Brittany Easley 7, Kelly Hams 6, Samantha Lindfors 3, Shannon Stenlund 2, Kelsey Wirtanen 2. The Cardinals were 14 of 20 from the free-throw line and Vermilion was 17 of 24. Rebounds: Nyberg 13, Hams 10, Lindfors 8, Wirtanen 4, Stenlund 3, Easley 3, Chamernick 2, White 1. The loss completes the Cardinal's season at 10-17 overall and 6-8 in the MCAC North Division.

HCC loses to Rainy River
The HCC Women's Basketball Team lost to Rainy River CC 66-79 on Wed., at Int. Falls. The loss closes the door on the Cardinals advancing to the MCAC State Tournament. rainy River led 42-31 at the half and maintained that edge during the second half. Hibbing made 28 of 75 shots for 37% but the Voyageurs made 29 of 63 for 46%. The Cards were 9 of 14 from the free-throw line and Rainy River 17 of 35. Scoring for the Cardinals were: Kelly Hams 19 points, Melissa Nyberg 19, Kelly Turk 11, Samantha Lindfors 7, Breanna Chamernick 6, Shannon Stenlund 2, Brittaney Easley 2. Rebounding: Nyberg 12, Lindfors 7, Turk 4, Hams 3, Chamernick 3, Stnelund 2, Easley 1. Assists: Hams 6, Turk 4, Stenlund 3, Chamernick 2, Nyberg 2, Lindfors 1, Easley 1. The Cardinals are 6-7 in the MCAC North division and 10-16 overall. They conclude their season on Saturday, Feb. 20 at Ely, MN versus Vermilion CC at 1 pm.

HCC loses to Itasca
The HCC Women's Basketball Team lost 61-75 to Itasca CC on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Hibbing. The game was close for the first 5 minutes then Itasca went on a mini-run to lead 20-14 at the ten minute mark and never relinquished the lead. Hibbing had the score 27-31 with three minutes to go in the first half but Itasca went on a run and they led 38-27 at the half. Hibbing stayed close in the second half but could not get shots to fall and Itasca made their free-throws at the end of the game. The Cardinals were 23 of 70 for 32% from the field. Itasca was 25 of 71 for 35%. The Cards made 11 of 18 free-throws and Itasca made 25 of 28.

HCC loses to Mesabi
The HCC Women's Basketball Team lost 65-77 to Mesabi Range CC on Wed., Feb. 10 at Virginia, MN. The Cardinals stated the game with cold shooting and turnovers and allowed Mesabi to race to a 14-2 lead. Foul trouble for Kelly Hams and Melissa Nyberg limited their playing time also. The Cardinals came back and were behind 38-42 at half-time. But that was as close as they would get in the second half, the 6-point deficit. Everytime the Cardinals made a run, the Norsewomen countered. Melissa Nyberg had a double-double scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. She also added 3 blocked shots and 3 steals to her performance. The Cards committed 23 turnovers. They shot 25 of 63 from the field for 39% but Mesabi made 25 of 55 for 45%. Mesabi made ten three-pointers to 5 for Hibbing. The Cardinals shot 90% from the free-throw line, making 10 of 11 but Mesabi made 17 of 25.

The Cardinals are 6-5 in the MCAC North Division and 10-14 overall. They will host Itasca CC on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 1 pm. This will be the last regular-season home game.

HCC defeats Fond du Lac
The HCC Women's Basketball Team contiued their winning ways by defeating Fond du Lac TCC 72/40 on Saturday, Feb. 6 at Cloquet, MN. The Cardinals started a run at the beginning of the game and never looked back.The Cards had a 32-22 lead at the half and then outscored the Thunder 20-18 in the second half. All nine players saw the court and they all scored. Kelly Hams led the Cardinals in scoring with 24 points including 4 three-pointers. Also scoring were: Kelly Turk 13, Shannon Stenlund 8, Melissa Nyberg 7, Samantha Lindfors 6, Britteny Easley 5, Breanna Chamernick 5, Brittany White 2, Kelsey Wirtanen 2. The Cards shot 45% from the field (29 of 64) while FDL made 13 of 43 for 30%. The Cardinals converted 9 of 14 free-throws (64%) to 10 of 18 (55%) for FDL.
The Cardinals pulled down 34 rebounds. to FDL's 26. Rebounding for the Carindals: Nyberg 7, Hams 6, Lindfors 5, Wirtanen 4, Easley 4, Turk 3, Stenlund 2, Chamernick 2, White 1. The Cards are 6-4 in the MCAC North Division and 10-13 overall. They will travel to Virginia, Mn on Wed., Feb. 10 for a 6 pm contest versus Mesabi Range. They will close out their home games on Saturday, Feb. 13 when they host Itasca CC on Sophomore Day at 1 pm.

HCC defeats Norhland
The HCC Women's Basketball Team enacted some revenge as they beat Northland CTC 71-53 on Friday, Feb. 5 at Hibbing. The game was tigh at the beginning with the teams trading baskets. Northland forced a turnover then came down and made their shot to take a four point lead. But Hibbing came right back and scored 23 points to Northland's 3 points in the second ten minutes of the first half to take a 33-19 lead into the locker room. Tough rebound on the defnesive end held Northland to just one shot. The second half started out just like the first with the team trading baskets. But then Northland started a run that saw Hibbing's 21 point lead diminish to 7 points. Brittany Easley made a couple of three-point shots to keep Hibbing's lead and the defense played tough. Both teams were in foul trouble but played in-your-face defense. Hibbing managed to start their own mini run at the end making their free-throws and outscoring Northland 24-17 in the last ten minutes of the game to seal the victory.
Scoring for Hibbing were Melissa Nyberg 19 points, Kelly Hams 16, Kelly Turk 14, Brittaney Easley 9, Samantha Lindfors 6, Shannon STenlund 4, and Breanna Chamernick 3. The Cardinals made 17 of 23 from the free-throw line. Northland sank 16 of 29 from the stripe. The Cards were 24 of 68 from the filed for 35% and Northland was 18 of 66 for 27%. The Cardinals are 5-4 in the MCAC North Division and 8-13 overall. They will travel to Cloquet for a conference game versus Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College at 1 pm on Saturday, Feb. 6.
HCC loses to Northland
Playing on Sunday, Jan. 31 in a reschedule game, the Cardinals lost 65-71 to Northlnad CTC at Thief River Falls, MN. The Cardinals were only down 33-35 at the half but could not pull even with the Pioneers in the second half. The Cardinals were out rebounded 44-39 and committed 2 more turnovers 18-16. Both teams made 27 baskets with Hibbing shooting 42% and Northland 43% from the field. Hibbing made 3 of 6 free-throws to 13 of 24 for Northland.

HCC defeats Central Lakes
The HCC Women's Basketball Team defeated Central Lakes College 52-47 on Jan. 30 at Hibbing. The game was tight most of the way as Hibbing held a 13-12 lead at the ten minute mark. Hibbing stretched their lead to 31-21 at the half. The second half saw the Raiders come storming back and take a 42-41 lead with ten minutes to go. The Cardinals had trouble with turnovers and not getting any offensive rebounds. The Raiders zone defense clamped down on the Cardinals inside game and they struggled from the perimeter. But the Cardinals came back defensively and shut down the Raiders who only scored 5 points in the final ten minutes of the game. The score was tied at 46 with 1:58 to go. The Cardinals played tough defense not allowing Brainerd to score. Kelly Hams sank her basket, was fouled, and sank her free-throw for a 49-46 lead. Brainerd made one free to bring the score to 47-49 with under a minute to go. The game got interesting as Hibbing committed a couple of turnovers but Brainerd could not make a basket. The Cardinals converted on their free-throws to make the final score 52-47.
Scoring for Hibbing were: Kelly Hams 15 points, Melissa Nyberg 13, Kelly Turk 10, Breanna Chamernick 9, Samantha Lindfors 5. Hibbing made 21 of 32 free-throws and the Raiders 11 of 19. The Cardinals were whistled for 18 fouls and Brainerd 23. The Cardinals shot a dismal 14 of 72 for 19% from the field. Brainerd was 16 of 52 for 30%. The Cardinals did control the boards gaining a 38-35 edge. Rebounding for the Cardinals: Hams 10, Nyberg 8, Turk 6, Lindfors 5, Chamernick 5, Stenlund 4. The Cardinals had 13 turnovers to Brainerd's 22.
The Cardinals are 4-3 in the MCAC North Division and 8-12 overall. They will travel to Thief River Falls on Sunday, Jan. 31 for a 4 pm make-up game with Northland CTC. On Feb. 5 they will host Northland CTC at 6 pm.

Hibbing loses to Rainy River
The HCC Women's Basketball Team lost 66-77 to Rainy River CC on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at Hibbing. The Voyageurs started stron and used the three-point shot to establish a 46-25 half-time lead. The Cardinals were cold from the field making only 26 of 69 shots. The Cardinals were out-rebounded 44-38. The Cardinals came out fired up in the second half and applied tough defensive pressure to cut into the Voyageurs lead. They were down 46 to 58 with ten minutes to go then whittled that to 60-68 with 4 minutes to go. But Hibbing could not get any closer as Rainy made their shots and then the free throws.
Scoring for Hibbing were Kelly Hams 23 points, Melissa Nyberg 20, Kelly TUrk 11, Breanna Chamernick 10, Shannon Stenlund 2. The Cards made 10 of 22 free throws for 43% while Rainy River was 7 of 18. The Cardinals are 3-3 in the MCAC North Division and 7-12 overall. They will host Central Lakes College on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 1 pm.
Hibbing Defeats Mesabi Range
The HCC Women's Basketball Team defeated Mesabi Range 66-63 on Wednesday at Hibbing. Mesabi held a 6 point lead 10 minutes into the game but Hibbing closed the gap to end the first half down 35-36. The second half was a gme of mini runs by each team. Hibbing held a 52-45 lead with 10 minutes to go but Mesabi came right back. Teams would trade defensive stops then offensive baskets. Both teams hustled and played tough defense. Melissa Nyberg made 4 free-throws during the last few seconds to keep the Cardinals ahead. Field scored a basket for Mesabi to bring the score to 63-65 with 17 second to go. Breanna Chamernick was fouled quickly and made 1 of two free-throws to give the Cardinals the 66-63 lead. With 3.1 seconds to go, Mesabi turned the ball over and Hibbing ran out the clock.
Scoring for Hibbing were: Melissa Nyberg 23 points, Kelly Turk 21 points, Kelly Hams 9, Samantha Lindfors 6, Shannon Stenlund 4, Breanna Chamnernick 3. The Cardinals made 15 of 25 free throws while Mesabi made 9 of 10. The cardinals were 24 of 68 from the field (35%) and Mesabi was 23 of 61 for 37%. Cardinals go 1-1 on Weekend games
The Women's Basketball Team dropped their MCAC North Division game to Itasca CC 65-77 on Friday, Jan. 15 at Grand Rapids, MN. Turnovers were the costly factor in the first half and ultimately provided the margin of victory in the game. Itasca had a 47-38 lead at the half. The second half was tight as the Cardinals scored 27 to Itasca's 30 points. Melissa Nyberg led the Cardinals with 26 points including 3 three-pointers, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals. Also scoring were: Kelly Hams 15, Kelly Turk 11, Shannon Stenlund 7, and Breanna Chamernick 6. The Cardinals made 11 of 17 free throws. Rebounds: Nyberg 10, Chamernick 8, Stenlund 8, Turk 7, Hams 6, Wirtanen 1. Assists: Chamernick 5, Turk 5, Nyberg 3, Stenlund 2, Hams 2. Steals: Nyberg 3, Chamernick 2, Hams 2, Turk 1. Blocked shots: Chamernick 2, Nyberg 1, Hams 1.

On Saturday, Jan. 16 the Cardinals traveled to Brainerd, Mn to take on the Raiders of Central Lakes College. The Cardinals were victorious 65-59. Turnovers again were a factor in the first half as the Cardinals committed 22 but were down by only 4 points 27-31 at the intermission. The Raiders were up by at least 12 points at one time in the first half. But the Cardinals battled back and put on their own run to end the first half. The Cardinals applied a lot of defensive pressure in the second half which led to turnovers by the Raiders and the Hibbing squad was able to capitalize with baskets at their end. Nyberg scored 18 points to lead the Cardinals in scoring. Kelly Turk had 17 points, 14 in the second half. Kelly Hams had 9 points, Samantha Lindfors 9, Breanna Chamernick 8. Hibbing was 11 of 22 at the free-throw line. Rebounds: Nyberg 8, Turk 8, Stenlund 6, Lindfors 4, Hams 3, Chamernick 3. Assists: Chamernick 5, Turk 4, Hams 3, Lindfors 3, Nyberg 1. Steals: Chamernick 4, Turk 3, Hams 3, Lindfors 2, Stenlund 1. Blocked shots: Chamernick 1, Turk 1, Nyberg 1, Lindfors 1.
The Cardinals are 2-2 in the MCAC North Division and 6-11 overall. They will host Mesabi Range CC on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 6 pm.

Kelly Hams has been named the Northern Division Player of the Week for last week's performance. Kelly is a sophomore forward from International Falls, MN. Last week she averaged 18.6 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals for the Cards. Congratulations Kelly!
HCC defeats Dond du Lac
The HCC Women's Basketball Team started slow but then picked up the pace and defeated Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College 73-37. The first ten minutes of the game was tight as Hibbing had a 13-6 lead. The Cardinals widened their lead to 24-16 at the half with balanced scoring. The second half was a different story as the Cardinals worked their press and defense to perfection and held the Thunder to 21 total points for the half. Rebounding was key as the Cardinals held Fond du Lac to just 2 offensive rebounds for the game but the Cards picked up 20 offensive boards. Hibbing out rebounded Fond du Lac 52-34. Four Cardinals were in double digits for scoring: Kelly Turk had 17 points, Kelly Hams 16, Breanna Chamernick 12, Shannon Stenlund 11. Also scoring were Melissa Nyberg 7, Brittany Easley 6, and Samantha Lindfors 4. The Cards made 12 of 16 free throws and the Thunder 5 of 12. Hibbing shot 38% from the field (29 of 75), the Thunder 14 of 54 for 25%. Hibbing forced 28 turnovers and committed 14.

HCC drops Conference opener
The HCC Women's BAsketball Team dropped thier first conference game 65-68 to Vemilion CC on Wed., Jan. 6 at Hibbing. The Cards enjoyed a 33-27 half-time lead by playing great defense in the second ten minutes of the first half and limiting Vermilion to 8 points. In the second half Vermilio picked up their intensity and Hibbing looked flat. With 10 minutes to go the score was tied 45-45 but Vermilion hustled and made 9 of 13 free-throw to seal their victory. Hibbing made 11 of 18 free-throw and Vermilion 20 of 29. Kelly Hams and Melissa Nyberg had double figures in scoring with 22 and 17 points. Kelly Turk had 8, Breanna Chamernick 7, Shannon Stenlund 5, Smaantha Lindfors 3, and Brittany Easley 3.Hams had 3 three-pointers and Chamernick 2. Hibbing got out rebounded 37-28. HCC loses to Western WI
The HCC Women's Basketball Team resumed play after the holiday break and lost 48-71 to Western WI College in Lacrosse, WI on Jan. 4. The Cardinals jumped out to an 18-3 run but then rebounds started going to Western WI and they went on a 28-3 run for a 31-21 lead at the half. 25 turnovers and getting outrebounded 58-44 did not help the Cardinal effort. Kelly Hams was the only Cardinal to reach double figures in scoring with 18 points. Others scoring for Hibing were: Melissa Nyberg 9, Shannon Stenlund 6, Samantha Lindfors 5, Kelly Turk 4, Brittany Easley 2, Breanna Chamernick 2, and Julie Petrangelo 2. HCC defeats Western WI for Tournament Championship
The HCC Women's Basketball Team won its own Holiday Tournament by defeating Western WI 78-57. The Cards made 12 three-pointers in the contest. Kelly Hams had 5 3's and Kelly Turk had 4. The first half was a close contest and the Cards enjoyed a 34-30 half-time lead. In the second half the cards made 7 of their 12 three-pointers. HCC defeats St. Cloud
The HCC Women's Basketball Team defeated St. Cloud Technical College 83-74 to win the first game of their Holiday Tournament. This is the third meeting of the two teams this season with the first two contests resulting in a split. The game was even most of the way as the score was tied 16-16 after the first ten minutes. The Cardinals made some key shots and had a 39-32 halft-time lead. The second half opened with both teams scoring 25 points in the first ten minutes. The last few minutes of the game saw lots of free throws being attempted. The Cardinals shot 17 free throws down the stretch and St. Cloud 11. Hibbing's soft three-quarter court press gained some turnovers and keep taking time off the clock. The Cardinals had balanced scoring as 4 Cards were in double figures. Hibbing falls to Mionneapolis
The HCC Women's Basketball fell 57-84 to Minneapolis CTC on Saturday, Dec. 12 at home. The Cardinals played tough the first ten minutes of the game where Minneapolis had a 19-16 lead. The second ten minnutes saw the Mavericks surge to a 45-30 half-time lead. Once again the first ten minutes of the second half was pretty even as Hibbing scored 19 points to Minneapolis's 20. But the height advantage and rebounding took a toll in the last ten minutes as Hibbing managed only 8 points and Minneapolis sank 19. Scoring for Hibbing Kelly Hams with 25 points, Melissa Nyberg 14, Kelly Truk 9, Breanna Chamernick 7, and Brittany White 2. Three-pointers: Hams 3, Nyberg 2, Turk 1. Hibbing loses to Anoka-Ramsey
The HCC Women's Basketball fell to Anoka-Ramsey CC 50-87 on Friday, Dec. 11 at Hibbing. The Cardinals stayed close in the first 10 minutes of the game with the score at 12-18 with 10:01 to go. But cold shooting and turnovers gave Anoka a 36-18 half-time lead. The first ten minutes of the seond half was pretty even with Hibbing scoring 23 points and Anoka 24. The second ten minutes was a different story with Anoka putting in 27 points to Hibbing's 9. Kelly Hams scored 19 points with Melissa Nyberg getting 16. Also scoring were Shannon Stenlund with 7, Kelly Turk with 6, and Breanna Chamernick 2. Hams had 3 three-pointers. The Cardinals made 10 of 14 free-throws and 18 of 50 field goals. The HCC Women's BAsketball Team dropped both games on their weekend trip. On Friday night the Cardinals lost 63-69 to St. Cloud Technical College. The Cardinals were behind 33-29 at the half. Height and physical size in the paint gave St. Cloud the edge in the game. Kely Hams and Melissa Nyberg scored 44 of the Cardinal's 63 points. Hams had 23 points with four-three pointers and Nyberg had 21. Kelly Turk added 8 points, Brittany Easley 6, and Breanna Chamernick 5. The Cards made 6 out of 10 free-throws and 25 of 77 shots from the field. Nyberg pulled down 20 rebounds, Hams had 12, Easley 7, Chamernick 7, Shannon Stenlund 5, Julie Petrangelo 5, and Turk 2. On Saturday, the Cards traveled to Fergus Falls, MN to take on the Spartans of MN State CC. THe Cardinals lost 50-63. Half-time score was 29-31. The Spartans made seven three-pointers. Scoring for the Cards were Kelly Turk 18, Kelly Hams 13, Melissa Nyberg 10, Breanna Chamernick 5, Brittany Easley 2, Shannon Stenlund 2. The Cards only shot 28% from the field (16 of 57) and Hibbing was 14 of 24 from the free-throw line. The Cards and the Spartans were all even in the rebound department 51-51, showing the defensive hustle by the Cards. The HCC Women's Basketball Team split their tournament games at the Gogebic CC Tournament Nov. 28-29 in Ironwood, MI. On Saturday, the Cardinals faced a tough squad from Milwuakee Technical College and lost 45-69. The Cardinals had a tough first half shooting just 22% from the field and fell behind 18-42 at the intermission. The second half saw Hibbing playing better defense and limiting Milwaukee to just 27 points. The Cardinal offense generated 27 points in the second half for the standoff. Scoring for Hibbing: Kelly Hams 14, Kelly Turk 12, Melissa Nyberg 11, Breanna Chamernick 2, Shannon Stenlund 2, Brittany Easley 3. Rebounds: Nyberg 11, Hams 9, Easley 6. On a, the Cardinals defeated host Gogebic CC 57-41. The Cards played tough defense the entire game limiting the Sampsons to 23% shooting from the field and taking 21 steals. The Cards had 21 assists. Kelly Hams and Kelly Turk were named to the All-Tournament Team for their two game efforts. Hams had 28 points, 21 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 assists. Turk had 30 points, 2 rebounds, 7 assists, and 9 steals.
The Cardinals are 2-4 on the season. They will be on the road this weekend as they travel to play St. Cloud Tech on Friday, Dec. 4 and then MN State CC - Fergus Falls on Saturday, Dec. 5.
HCC defeats Alumni
The HCC Women's Basketball Team defeated their older sisters by beating the Alumni 58-42 on Friday, Nov. 27. The younger Cardinals were ahead 23-21 at the half. Scoring for the current Cards were: Melissa Nyberg 24 points, Kelly Turk 11, Kelly Hams 9, Shannon Stenlund 5, Julie Petrangelo 4, Breanna Chamernick 3, and Brittany Easley 2. Scoring for the mature Cardinals were Kaci Johnson 9 points, Nicole Nyberg 9, Marci Smith 4, Ashley Palmer 3, Tina (Polla) Anrig 2, Steph Morrisette 2, and Becca Kilbourne 2.
Kaci Johnson and Nicole Nyberg were honored at the beginning of the second half for receiving Academic All-American honors in 2008-09.
The Cardinals will be participating in the Gogebic CC Tournament Nov. 28-29 in Ironwood, MI.
HCC splits weekend at Mesabi Tournament
The HCC Women's Basketball Team split their weekend games at the Mesabi Tournament. On Friday, Nov. 13 the Cardinals lost to Rainy River CC 63-75. On Saturday, the Cards posted their first win of the season 60-46 over St. Cloud Technical College.
Against Rainy River the Cards put 63 points on the board but fell to a taller Voyageur squad. The big difference was the 53-38 margin in rebounds. The Cardinals gave up too many second chances in the paint. Scoring was more balanced as Kelly Hams led the way with 26 points and Kelly Turk and Melissa Nyberg added 15 points each. Shannon Stenlund had 3 points and Brittaney Easley and Breanna Chamernick had 2 each. Hams sank 5 three-pointers, Nyberg and Turk had 3 each. The Cards shot 34 % from the field (22/65) and 7 of 14 from the free-throw line. The Cardinals took better care of the ball with only 19 turnovers (RR had 18). Nyberg led the team in rebounding with 12 while Chamernick and Hams each had 7. Assists- Chamernick 5, Turk 5, Hams 4, Nyberg 3. Steals - Turk 3, Chamernick 2, Hams 2, Nyberg 1. Blocked shots - Chamernick, Nyberg, Hams.
On Saturday against St. Cloud Tech, the Cardinals led 35-28 at the half then extended their lead to take the 60-46 victory. The Cardinals were cold in the shooting department making 19 of 79 shots for 24% from the field. From the line the Cardinals were 16 of 21 for 76%. Three Cardinals reached double figures in scoring - Kelly Hams led with 17 points, Britanney Easley had 12, and Melissa Nyberg had 10. Kelly Turk put in 9 points, Breanna Chamernick 6, Julie Petrangelo 4, and Shannon Stenlund 2. Hams had 3 three-pointers. The Cards took down 49 rebounds to 38 for St. CLoud. Chamernick hauled in 15 rebounds, Stenlund had 7, Petrangelo 6, Easley 6, Turk 5, Hams 5, Nyberg 4, White 1. Assists - Chamernick 9, Hams 4, Easley 3, Turk 2, Petrangelo 2, Stenlund 1, Nyberg 1. Steals - Turk 3, Petrangelo 2, Hams 2, Stenlund 2, Chamernick 2, Easley 2. Hams and Nyberg each had a blocked shot. The Cardinals cut down their turnovers committing only 11 while St. Cloud had 20.
The Cardinals are 1-3 overall. They will return to action on Fri., Nov. 27 at 5 pm when they face the Alumni. They will participate in the Gogebic CC Tournament Nov. 28 (vs. Milwaukeee Area Technical College at 1 pm) and Nov. 29.
HCC opens season at MN West Tournament
The HCC Cardinals opened their 2009-10 season at the MN West Tournament Nov. 6 & 7 with 2 loses.
On Friday night the Crdinals faced Riverland CC and lost 44-70. Halft time score was 21-36. The Cardinals successful volleyball season has hampered the start of the basketball season with not much time between seasons to swtich gears. The Cards shot 32% from the field , had 32 turnovers, and shot 12 of 19 free-throws. Kelly Hams led the Cardinals in scoring with 14 points. Melissa Nyberg had 10 points and Kelly Turk and Julie Petrangelo each had 6 points. Rebounding for the Cardinals were Nyberg with 11, Hams 7, Easley 4, Chamernick 4, Turk 4, Julie Petrangelo 4, Kelsey Wirtanen 2. Assists - Turk 6, Hams 3, Chmernick 2, Shannon Stenlund 2. Steals - Turk 4, Easley 3, Nyberg 2. Chamernick and Nyberg had 1 blocked shot each.
On Saturday, The Cardinals faced the host school, MN West CC, and lost 46-83. The Bluejays were ahead 41-21 at the half. Kelly Hams was the only Cardinal that scored in double figures with 24 points. The rest of the team scored 22 points - Kelly Turk 9, Melissa Nyberg 8, Shannon Stenlund 3, and Brittany Easley 2. The Cardinals were 10 of 17 from the free-throw line, and 18 of 57 (31%) from the field. They committed 27 turnovers. Hams and Nyber each had 2 three-pointers. The Cards are 0-2 on the young season. They will travel to Virginia, Mn on Hov. 13 & 14 to participate in the Mesabi Range CC Tournament.
HCC Returns 4 Sophomores
The HCC Women's Basketball Team returns 4 sophomores to its roster for the 2009-10 season. Returning players are: Breanna Chamernick - a guard from Hibbing, Brittany Easley - a guard from Ironwood, MI, Kelly Hams - a forward from International Falls, MN, and Shannon Stenlund - a guard from Cherry, MN.

Incoming freshmen include Melissa Nyberg from Hibbing, Kasey Palmer from Floodwood, Julie Petrangelo from Hibbing, Kelly Turk fromAurora, MN, Kelsey Wirtanen, from Hibbing, and Brittany White from Hibbing.

Mike Turnbull will be at the helm of the Cardinals once again, starting his 3rd season coaching the women after 10 years coaching the HCC Men's Teams.
