Post Season Honors

     Congratulations to Aaron Norman and Phillip Freeman for post-season honors from the MCAC.  Norman, a sophomore guard from Milwaukee, Wi, was named to the MCAC All-North Division and the All- State Team.  Freeman, a freshman guard from Richfield, MN, was named to the MCAC All-North Division Team.  Congratulations men!

 

HCC loses to Vermilion

     The HCC Men's Basketball Team lost 74-82 to Vermilion CC on Saturday, Feb. 20 at Ely, MN.  The Cards were intense and rolled to a 46-28 half-time lead.  But everything changed in the second half.  Vermilion came out on fire and erased the Cardinal 18 point lead in 5 minutes.  The Cardinals gave a valient effort but Vermilion seemed to own the court. 

     Scoring for Hibbing: Josh Mastin 16 points, Jay Cary 15, Phillip Freeman 14, Orlando Edwards 13, Aaron Norman 8, Isaac Roll 8.  The Cardinals made 16 of 19 free-throws and Vermilion 13 of 22.

     The loss brings the Cardinal season to a close.  They were 15-12 over-all and 7-7 in the MCAC North Division.

 

 

HCC loses to Rainy Rivr

     The HCC Men's Basketball Team lost an important game to Rainy River Cc 90-95 at Int. Falls on Wed., Feb. 17.  Had the Cardinals won they would have secured a place in the MCAC State Tournament.  To advance, they need to defeat Vermilion CC on Saturday and win the playoff.  The Cardinals play tough through the game and enjoyed a 46-42 lead at the half.  Rainy River had a mini-run to start the second half and that gave them the lead which they never relinquished.  Aaron Norman had 25 points to pace Hibbing.  Also scoring were Phillip Freeman 18 points, Jay Cary 13, Josh Mastin 12, Orlando Edwards 9, Feorde Marchand 5, Troy Marshall 2.  Hibbing made 18 of 27 free-throws and Rainy River 18 of 26.  Freeman hit 3 three-pointers for the Cards.

     The Cardinals drop to 7-6 in the MCAC North Division and 15-11 overall.  They are tied with Vermilion CC for 4th place.  The Cardinals will travel to Ely, MN on Saturday, Feb. 27 for a 3 pm contest to close out the regular season. 

HCC defeats Itasca

     The HCC Men's Basketball Team defeated Itasca CC 91-77 on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Hibbing.  The Cardinals bolted to a 28-16 lead after ten minutes.  They stretched their lead to 48-33 at the half.  The Cards hustled and played their offense.  In the second half, the Viking came back and settled into their offensie nad pulled with 55-65 with ten minutes to go.  Hibbing withstood the pressure and made their free-throws at the end to seal the victory.

     Scoring for Hibbing were Aaron Norman 29 points, Phillip Freeman 17, Orlando Edwards 13, Josh Mastin 12, Jay Cary 9, Isaac Roll 5, Wes Lorence 2, Troy Marschall 2, Georde Marchand 2.  The Cards maded 25 of 34 free-throws, the Viking 10 of 14.  

     The Cardinals are 7-5 in the MCAC North Division and 15-10 overall.  They will travel to International Falls on Wed., Feb. 17 for an 8 pm contest versus Rainy River CC.

   

HCC defeats Fond du Lac

     The HCC Men's BAsketball Team defeated Fond du Lac TCC 83-71 on Saturday, Feb. 6 in Cloquet.  The Cards were sluggish in the first half and fell to a 35-43 deficit going into the locker room.  The Cardinals came out focused in the second half outscoring the Thunder 50-28 and controlling the boards. They out-rebounded FDL by 14.   Scoring for Hibbing were: Orlando Edwards 22, Phillip Freeman 17, Jay cary 14, Aaron Norman 10, Rahmel Glover 9, Isaac Roll 8, Troy Marchall 2, and Josh Mastin 1.  The Cardinals made 30 of 39 free-throws while FDL made 14 of 21.

   The Cardinals are 5-5 in the MCAC North Division and 13-10 overall.  They will travel to Virginia, MN on Wed., Feb. 10 to face Mesabi Range CC at 8 pm.   The Cards will play their last home game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 13 versus Itasca CC at 3 pm.  It will be Sophomore Appreciation Day.

 

HCC loses to Northland

     Playing the same team in 5 days, the Cardinals lost 68-71 to Northland CTC on Friday, Feb. 5 at Hibbing.  The Cardinals started out cold as they fell behind 8-17 at the ten minute mark of the first half.  Playing tougher defense provided the spark and the Cardinals netted 23 points in the second ten minutes and went into the locker room behind 31-32.  Both teams traded basketsuntil Norhtland went on a mini-run to take the lead 51-47 with 10 minutes to go.  Hibbing fought back and had the game within 2 points with 2 minutes to go but the Cards could not stop Northland from scoring.  Hibbing was forced to foul the last minute to try and get possession of the ball. 

Scoring fro Hibing:  Phillip Freeman 21 points, Josh Mastin 11, Issac Roll 10, Aaron Norman 9, Orland Edwards 6, Georde Marchand 4, Rahmel Glover 4, Jay Cary 2, Wes Lorence 1.  The Cards made 23 of 31 free throws and Northland sank 16 of 26.

     The Cardinals are 4-5 in the MCAC North Division and 12-10 overall.  They will be in CLoquet on Saturday, Feb. 6 for a 3 pm contest versus Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.

 

HCC loses to Northland

     The HCC Men's BAsketball Team lost 62-93 to Northland CTC in Thief River Falls on Sunday in a re-scheduled game from January 23.  The Cardinals played tough in the first half hustling on the defensive end and trailed by just 5 point at the half 39-34.  The second half was a different story as Northland turned up the intensity.  The Pioneers had a big edge in rebounds 47-28 and shot 36  (24 of 36) free-throws to Hibbing's 18 (12 of 18). 

     Scoring for Hibbing: Phillip Freeman 24, Rahmel Glover 11, Orlando Edwards 8, Troy Marschall 7, Jay Cary 4, Josh Mastin 4, Wes Lorence 2, Isaac Roll 2.

     The Cardinals are 4-4 in the MCAC North Division and 12-9 overall.  They will Nost Northland CTC on Friday, Feb. 5 at 8 pm. 

HCC loses to Central Lakes

   The HCC Men's Basketball Team lost 55-76 to Central Lakes College on Saturday, Jan. 30 at Hibbing.  The score was tied at 10:01 in the first half.  Three-point shooting helped the Raiders gain a 33-27 half-time advantage.    The Cardinals went ice cold in the shooting department making only 2 baskets and 1 free-throw in the first ten minutes of the secon half.  Central Lakes was strong on the glass limiting Hibbing to just one shot.  Hibbing did get untracked in the last ten minutes of the game scoring 23 points.  But the Raiders just keep building their lead.   

     Scoring for Hibbing: Phillip Freeman 21 points, Josh Mastin 14, Rahmel Glover 10, Orlando Edwards 5, Georde Marchand 4, Issac Roll 1.

     The Cardinals are 4-3 in the MCAC North Division and 12-8 overall.  They will be traveling to Thief River Falls, MN on Sunday, Ja. 31 for a make-up game versus Northland CTC.  On Friday, Feb. 5 the Cardinals will host Northland CTC at 8 pm.

HCC Defeats Rainy River

     The HCC Men's Basketball team continued their winning ways by downing Rainy River CC 94-86 on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at Hibbing.  The Cardinals and Voygeurs played even for the first ten minutes then Hibbing started pulling away and took a 42-36 lead into the locker room at the half.  The start of the second half saw Hibbing entend its lead on good defense and running the floor.  Hibbing built a 14 point lead but then Rainy River put on a mini-run to close the gap to 6 points.  Hibbing cmae through with their free-throw shooting making their last 9 points at the line.  Hibbing made 20 of 26 free-throws to Rainy River's 15 of 27.

     Scoring for the Cardinals were: Josh Mastin 26 points, Orlando Edwards 24, Phillip Freeman 19, Georde Marchand 8, Jay Cary 8, Rahmel Glover 7, Issac Roll 2.  The Cardinals were called for 20 fouls and Rainy River 23.

     The Cardinals are 4-2 in the MCAC North Division and 12-7 overall.  They will host  Central Lakes College on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3 pm.

HCC Defeats Mesabi Range

     The HCC Men's Basketball Team defeated Mesabi Range CC 76-65 on Wed,, Jan. 20 at Hibbing.  The Cardinals led 38-33 at the half.  Hibbing hustled the entire game and managed to contain the mini runs from Mesabi.  The Cardinals put on extra pressure when Mesabi threatened to take the lead.  Then the Cards restablished their 3 to 5 point lead.   Hibbing had balanced scoring: Philliip Freeman 19 points, Orlando Edwards 13, Josh Mastin 13 points, Rahmel Glover 9, Georde Marchand 8, Jay Cary 8, Issac Roll 5, Wes Lorence 1.  The Cardinals made 18 of 28 free-throws while Mesabi made 18 of 23.  Freeman had 4 three-pointers for Hibbing. 

     The Cardinals are 3-2 in the MCAC North Division and  11-7 overall.  They will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 23 when they travel to Thief River Falls, MN for a 3 pm game versus Northland CTC.

HCC goes 1-1 in weekend games

     The HCC Men's Basketball Team split their road games in the MCAC North Division this past weekend.  On Friday, Jan. 15 the Cardinals defeated Itasca CC 64-62.  Hibbing had several runs in the first half and had a 13-point lead at one time.  But Itasca battled back and only trailed 33-38 at the hlaf.  The Cardinals went on a run to start the second half but the Vikings battled back once again.  It then became a game of mini-runs by each team with Hibbing coming out on top 64-62.  Scoring for Hibbing were: Orlando Edwards 20 points, Aaron Norman 12, Josh Mastin 9, Rahmel Glover 8, Jay Cary 7, Phil Freeman 5, Georde Marchand 2, Troy Marschall 1.  The Cardinals made 17 of 25 free-throws.

     On Saturday the Cardinals traveled to Brainerd, Mn to take on the Raiders of Central Lakes College.  The Cardinals were defeated 78-71.  The Raiders held a 39-38 lead at the half.  It was a game of possessions and the last few went to the Raiders who made good on their opportunities and Hibbing did not.  The game was well-played by both teams and there was defensive hustle all over the court.  Scoring for Hibbing: Phillip Freeman 22 points, Aaron Norman 14, Orland Edwards 14, Jay Carey 12, Josh Mastin 4, Rahmel Glover 4, Geordie Marchand 1.  Hibbing made 15 of 17 free-throws.  Freeman, Cary, and Norman all had 2 three-pointers.

     The Cardinals are 2-2 in the MCAC North Division and 10-7 overall.  They will host Mesabi Range CC on Wed., Jan. 20 at 8 pm.

 

HCC defeats Fond du Lac

   The HCC Men's Basketball Team defeated Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College 68-66 on Saturday, Jan. 9 in Hibbing.  The Cardinals were down 25-38 at the half.  They came out fired up in the second half outscoring the Thunder 19-8 in the first ten minutes.  The secon ten minutes proved entertinaing as each team was running the ball and the score was close with each team taking turns with the lead.  The Cardinals took a 64-61 lead on two free throws by Aaron Norman.  As the clock ran down to one minute,  the Thunder came down and made a three to tie the score.  Hibbing ran down the court and scored on a drive by Norman.  Fond du Lac came right back with a bucket by Justin Roberts.  With 7.8 seconds the Cardinals got the ball down the floor and Norman drove and scored again to make it 68-66.  The Thunder had 2.8 seconds to get the ball down the court and score but their long field goal fell short.

     Scoring for Hibbing: Phillip Freeman 17, Aaron Norman 15, Georde Marchand 10, Wes Lorence 10, Josh Mastin 8, Jay Cary 4, Orlando Edwards 2, Troy Marschall 2.  The Cardinals made 11 of 19 free-throws and the Thunder 8 of 12.

     The Cardinals are 1-1 in the MCAC North Division and 9-6 overall.  They will be on the road this coming week as they travel to face Itasca CC on Fri., Jan. 15 at 8 pm and then Central Lakes College in Brainerd, MN on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 3 pm. 

  

HCC loses Conference opener

    The HCC Men's Basketball lost their MCAC North Division opener to Vermilion CC 89-99 on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at Hibbing.  The first half was close as the Ironmen had a slim 46-43 lead.  The Cardinals keep the game close but the athleticism of Vermilon was evident as they ran the floor well.  The Cardinals were 16 of 19 from the free throw line and Vermilion was 21 of 30.  Four Cards were in double figures for scoring: Aaron Norman had 34, Orlando Edwards 14, Georde Marchand 11, and Phillip Freeman 10.  Also scoring for Hibbing: Josh Mastin had 8, Issac Roll 7, and Jay Cary 5.

     The Cards are 0-1 in the MCAC North Division and 8-6 overall.  They will host Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 3 pm.

 

HCC Start New Year with win

   The HCC Men's Basketball Team started the New Year off with a 92-80 victory over Western WI at Lacrosse, WI on Jan. 4.  It was a team effort as 5 Cardinals scored in double figures and played disciplined offense.  Scoring for Hibbing: Josh Mastin 25 points, Georde Marchand 18, Phillip Freeman 14, Jay Carey 12, Orlando Edwards 12, Aaron Norman 8, Troy Marschall 3.  Marchand pulled down 14 rebounds.  The Cardinals made 20 of 29 free-throws and Western was 25 of 34.  Freeman had 3 three-pointers, Cary 3, and Marchand 2.

   The Cardinals will open their MCAC North Division Schedule on Wed., Jan. 6 when they host Vermilion CC at 8 pm.  The Cardinals are 8-5 overall.

All-Tournament Team

     The following individuals were named to the Hibbing Holiday Tournament All-Tournament Team: #30 Nic Faust St. Cloud Technical College; #10 Anthony LaPlant gogebic CC; #10 Aaron Norman and #23 Josh Mastin from Hibbing CC; #22 Nick Perkins and #33 Nate Heisler from Western WI. 

HCC loses to Western WI

     The HCC Men's Basketball Team lost 87-97 to Western WI in the championship game at the Hibbing Holiday Tournament.  The Calivers had a 37-36 lead at the half.  The Cardinals had their opportunities but the ball would not fall in the rim.  With 2:45 to go in the game the Cardinals had cut the lead and were behind 70-73.  The Cardinals could not convert their shots and Western WI was able to score on their possessions.  Scoring for Hibbing: Aaron Norman 35, Jay Cary 12, Erick Ferra 10, Rahmel Glover 9, Phil Freeman 7, Josh Mastin 6, Issac Roll 5, Georde Marchand 3.  The Cardinals made 18 of 23 free-throws and Western WI sank 24 of 33.

     The Cardinals are 7-5 on the season and will take a break for the holidays.  They will resume play when they travel to Lacrosse, WI to take on Western WI on Jan. 4.  They will open their conference season on Wed., Jan. 6 when they host Vermilion CC at 8 pm.

HCC defeats St. Cloud

  The HCC Men's BAsketball Team defeated St. Cloud Technical College 89-46 in their first round game of the Hibbing Holiday Tournament.  The Cardinals were hitting on all cylinders throughout the game and had a 46-30 half-time lead.  All the Cardinals found plenty of playing time and the scoring was balanced.  Scoring for Hibbing: Orlando Edwards 21, Josh Mastin 16, Aaron Norman 12, Phil Freeman 12, Jay Cary 9, Georde Marchand 8, Rahmel Glover 3, Issac Roll 2.  The Cards make 10 of 17 from the free-throw line. 

     The Cards will face Western WI in the 4 pm championship game.  Hibbing is 7-4 on the season.

Congratulations to Erick Ferra

     Erick Ferra, a freshman forward from Milwaukee, WI, was named Player of the Week for the MCAC North Division.  Erick averaged a double-double with 19.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in two contests versus Southern Division teams.  Congratulations Erick.

   The HCC Men's Basketball Team defeated Minneapolis CTC 75-68 Saturday, Dec. 12 at Hibbing.  Playing with a 40-minute intensity, the Cardinals defeated the Mavericks who were nationally ranked in the NJCAA DIII National Poll.  The Cards started a little slow having trouble finding their shooting spots and fell behind 15-9 at the 10-minute mark.  But great hustle tied the score at 30 at the half.  Hibbing came out fired up for the second half.  Hibbing enjoyed a 2 point lead with 10 minutes to go.  The Cardinals stayed composed and hit the boards hard to limit Minneapolis to just one shot.  The game was close to the end when Minneapolis was fouling to get possession on missed free throws.  The Cards only made 12 of 21 free-throws but it was enough in the end to seal the victory.  Minneapolis shot 11 of 19 free-throws.  Phil Freeman hit 5 three-pointers.  Scoring for Hibbing: Aaron Norman 23 points, Phil Freeman 21, ERick Ferra 23, Jay Cary 3, Orland Edwards 3, Rahmel Glover 2.  Rebounds: Ferra 10, Edwards 5, Freeman 5, Glover 3, Cary 3, Norman 2, Roll 2.  Steals: Glover 3, Norman 3, Ferra 2, Freeman 1, Marchand 1.  Assists: Norman 6, Cary 3, Glover 2, Freeman 2, Mastin 1. 

     The Cardinals are 6-4 on the season.  They will be hosting the Hibbing Holiday Tournament on Dec. 18 & 19.  Gogebic CC plays Western WI at 4 pm and the Cardinals take on St. Cloud Tech at 8 pm.  On Saturday, the men's consolation game is at noon and the championship at 4 pm.

HCC loses to Anoka-Ramsey

     The HCC Men's BAsketball Team fell to Anoka-Ramsey CC 72-81.  The first ten minutes was even play as Anoka scored 22 points to Hibbing's 21.  Cold shooting and turnovers cost Hibbing as the only scored 10 points.  Anoka took a 36-31 half-time lead into the locker room.  Hibbing came out on fire and played hard defense outsocring Anoka 25 to 16.  The last 10 minutes of the game saw Hibbing lose their focus and get out-rebounded.  Scoring for Hibbing wereAaron Norman 19 points, Erick Ferra 16, Phillip Freeman 12, Rahmel Glover 8, Orlando Edwards 7, Jay Cary 4, Georde Marchand 2.  The Cardinals made 7 of 11 free-throws to Anoka's 15 of 17.  Rebounds: Ferra 15, Freeman 8, Norman 5, Edwards 4, Roll 4, Cary 3, Marchand 2.  Steals: Glover 3, Norman 3, Marchand 2, Freeman 2, Cary 1, Edwards 1.  Assists:  Norman 5, Freeman 3, Edwards 2, Glover 2, Cary 1, Ferra 1.  

   The Cards are 5-4 on the season and will host Minneapolis CTC at 3 pm on Saturday, Dec. 12.

 

HCC wins and loses on road trip

     The HCC Men's Basketball Team won at St; Cloud on Friday night Dec. 4. The Cardinals ran to a 43-30 halft-time lead and stretched that to the 87-62 victory over St. Cloud Technical College.  The Cardinals ran and shot the ball very well.  Phil Freeman was the leading scorer for the Cards with 25 points including four three-pointers.  Aaron Norman had 16 points, Jay Carey 10, Georde Marchand 8, Josh Mastin 7, Orlando Edwards 5, Troy Marschall 5, Erick Ferra 4, Isaac Roll 4, and Rahmel Glover 3.  Hibbing was 14 of 22 from the free-throw line and 33 of 71 from the field.  Rebounds - Erick Ferra 17, Issac Roll 7, Georde Marchand 5, Aaron Norman 5, Josh Mastin 4, Orlando Edwards 3, Jay cary 3, Phil Freeman 3.  Steals - Norman 4, Glover 3, Freeman 2, Marchand 2, Ferra 2.  Assists - Norman 5, Ferra 4, Mastin 2.  Blocked shots - Marchand, Edwards. 

     On Saturday, the Cardinals faced MN State - Fergus Falls and fell 79-87.  The Cards played well in the first half and were down by only 3 points, 35-38 at the half.  At the start of the second half the Cards lost their intensity and Fergus Falls ran their lead to 13 points then extend the lead to 19 points with 5 minutes to play.  The Cardinals then came back to life and fought hard ending the game with an 11-0 run.  Scoring for the Cards: Phil Freeman 22 points, Aaron Norman 16, Orlando Edwards 12, Eric Ferra 9, Josh Mastin 6, Ramhel Glover 5, Jay Cary 4, Georde Marchand 2, Troy Marschall 3.  The Cards shot 11 of 15 from the free-throw line and 32 of 76 from the field.  Rebounds - Ferra 9, Mastin 5, Edwards 5, Norman 5, Glover 4, Freeman 3, Marchand 3, Roll 3.  Steals - Norman 6, Edwards 2, Glover 2.  Assists - Norman 5, Glover 4, Freeman 2. 

     The Cards are 5-3 on the season and will host Anoka-Ramsey CC on Dec. 11 at 8 pm.  On Saturday, Dec. 12 they will host Minneapolis CC at 3 pm.

 

 

HCC splits games at Gogebic Tournament

     The HCC Men's Basketball Team lost one and won one at the Gogebic CC Tournament Nov. 28-29 in Ironwood, MI.  On Saturday, The Cards faced Milwuakee Tech and lost 81-89.  Coach Johnson was not pleased with the defensive efforts of his squad.  Hibbing gave up 50 points in the first half and fell behind 36-50 at the break.  In the second half the Cards limited Milwaukee to 39 points but could not get a string of points together at crucial times.  Scoring for Hibbing were Phil Freeman 19 points, Rahmel Glover 13, Aaron Norman 13, Orlando Edwards 13, Eric Ferra 13, Jay Cary 4, Georde Marchand 5, and Isaac Roll 1.  The Cardinals shot 19 of 29 from the free-throw line.  Rebounds - Ferra 9, Glover 7, Norman 6, Edwards 5, Cary 4, Mastin 3, Marchand 3, Freeman 3, Roll 2.   Steals - Norman 6, Glover 4, Cary 2, Freeman 1, Ferra 1.  Assists - Glover 6, Mastin 3, Ferra 1, Freeman 1, Cary 1, Norman 1.  Blocked shots - Ferra 2, Roll 1.

   On Sunday, the Cardinals defeated host Gogebic CC 76-74 coming back from a 15-point deficit.  The score was knotted at 26 at the half but the Sampsons rolled to a 15-point lead in the second half as the Cardinals intensity waned.  With four-minutes remainin in the game the Cards were down by 12 points when the full-court pressure started.  The Cards got some steals and went inside with the ball.  Orland Edwards had a steal that put Hibbing up by one.  Then in the last minute of the game Eric Ferra got 2 steals that sealed the victory.  Scoring for Hibbing: Ferra 24 points, Phil Freeman 15, Edwards 13, Norman 8, Glover 8, Marchand 6, Josh Mastin 2.  The Cards were 26 of 41 at the free-throw line.  Rebounds - Ferra 19, Freeman 9, Edwards 7, Glover 6, Cary 5, Norman 5, Marchand 4, Mastin 3, Roll 1.  Steals - Norman 5, Glover 4, Freeman 3, Cary 1, Edwards 1, Ferra 1.  Assists - Norman 5, Glover 2, Freeman 1, Cary 1. 

     The Cards are 4-2 on the season.  They will at St. Cloud Tehnical College on Fri., Dec. 4 at 8 pm and then at MN State CC-Fergus Falls on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 3 pm.

 

HCC defeats Alumni

     The HCC Men's Basketball Team defeated the Alumni  71-66.  Scoring for the younger Cardinals were: Erick Ferra 14, Josh Martin 12, Rahmel Glover 12, Connor Parenteau 10, Phil Freeman 7, Orlando Edwards 6, Aaron Norman 4, Georde Marchand 4, Issac Roll 2.    Scoring for the senior Cards were: Dan Helstrom 18, Todd Bigelow 9, Scott Ciochettl 8, Chris Kaml 7, Rob Schoenrock 6, Eric Augustin 6, Jesse Quick 6, Rob Bigelow 4, Bruce Merrell 2.  Spencer Aune and Blaine Turnbull also played.

     The Cards will be participating in the Gogebic CC Tournament in Ironwood, MI Nov. 28-29.

HCC suffers first loss

   The HCC Cardinals lost 70-81 to Rainy River CC in the Mesabi Range Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 13.  The Cardinals had 4 playrs in double figures for scoring but could not overcome the firepower of Rainy River.  The Cards shot 39.5% from the field (30/76) and 8 out of 10 from the free-throw line.  Scoring for Hibbing were: Rahmel Glover 16 points, Erick Ferra 11, Aaron Norman 11, Orlando Edwards 10, Isaac Roll 7, Phil Freeman 6, Georde Marchand 5, Jay Cary 4.  The Cardinals pulled down 38 rebounds with Ferra having 11, Edwards 7, Norman 6, Cary 4.  Norman and Edwards each had 3 steals.  Norman had 5 assists, Glover 3, Edwards 3.  Ferra had 3 blocked shots and Roll had 2. 

   On Nov. 14 the Cardinals faced UW Barron Co. and came away with a 92-56 victory.  The Cardinals shot much better from the field putting in 39 of 69 shots for a 56.5% and made 9 of 15 free-throws.  Every Cardinal scored with Aaron Norman leading the way with 15 points.  Scoring were - Norman 15, Erick Ferra 14, Orlando Edwards 12, Jay Cary 9, Phil Freeman 9, Isaac Roll 8, Josh Mastin 7, Rahmel Glover 6, Georde Marchand 5, Conor Parenteau 4, Troy Marschall 3.  The Cardinals pulled down 39 rebound.  Ferra had 10, Glover 9, Freeman 4, Marchand 4, Edwards 4, Cary 2, Norman 2, Marschall 2, Roll 1, Mastin 1.  Steals - Glover 5, Norman 5, Ferra 5, Freeman 3, Parenteau 2, Edwards 2, Mastin 2, Marschall 2, Roll 1.  Assists - Norman 6, Freeman 4, Edwards 2.  Blocked shots - Ferra 3, Glover 2, Norman 1.

     The Cardinals are 3-1 on the season and will host the Alumni on Friday, Nov. 27 at 7 pm.  They will be participating in the Gogebic CC Tournament in Ironwood, MI on Nov. 28-29.

 

HCC Opens Season with 2 wins

     The HCC Men's Basketball Team opened thier 2009-10 season with 2 wins at the MN West CC Tournament in Worthington, MN Nov. 6 & 7.

     On Friday, the Cardinals faced the host school MN West and came away with a 75-65 win.  The Cardinals were ahead 31-24 at the half.  Aaron Norman, sophomore guard, had a big game scoring 24 points, grabbing 6 rebounds, getting 6 steals and 6 assists.  Hibbing's press put the pressure on the Bluejays in critical spots that led into turnovers.  Also scoring for Hibbing were: Phil Freeman 15, Ramel Glover 10, Jay Cary 9, Orlando Edwards 7, Erick Ferra 9, Georde Marchand 2, Josh Mastin 4, Isaac Roll 2.  The Cards were 20 of 28 from the free-throw line.

     On Saturday, the Cards faced Riverland CC and came away with an 80-73 overtime win.  The Cards were ahead 34-27 at the half.  Riverland closed the gap to tie the game at 70 and send it into overtime.  The Cardinals played better defense limiting Riverland to just 3 points in the 5-minute ovetime and scoring 10 points to seal the win.  Aaron Norman once again led the Cardinals in scoring with 24 points.  He added 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals.  Also scoring for the Cardinals were - Jay Cary 12, Josh Mastin 10, Erick Ferra 7, Ramel Glover 7, Phil Freeman 6, Georde Marchand 4, Orlando Edwards 6, Isaac Roll 4.  The Cards were 21 of 30 from the free-throw line.

     The Cards are 2-0 on the young season.  They will participate in the Mesabi Range Tournament Nov. 13 & 14. 

HCC returns 5 Sophomores

     The HCC Men's Basketball Team returns 5 sophomores for the 2009-10 season.  Those returning are Jay Carey -  6'3" guard from Hibbing, Aaron Norman - 6' guard from Milwaukee, WI, Georde Marchand - 6'3" forward from Hibbing, Josh Mastin - 6'2" guard  from International Falls, and Issac Roll - 6'7" center from Rush City.

     Incoming freshmen are: Ramel Glover - 6' guard from Virginia Beach, VA, Phillip Freeman - 5'11" guard from Richfield, MN, Connor Parenteau - 6' guard from Hibbing, Anthony clement - 6' guard from Cherry,  Orlando Edwards - 6'2" guard from Virginia Beach, VA, Troy Marschall - 6'1" guard from Central, MN, and Erick Ferra - 6'6" forward from Milwaukee, WI.

 

     The Cardinals will be coached by Matt Johson who starts his 3rd year at the helm.  Community Volunteers will be Dan Helstrom and Eric Augustin.
