Assessment Testing
Assessments - Who must take the new student assessment?
New students must complete Hibbing Community College's assessment tests prior to registering unless you meet one or more of the following:
- Students transferring college credits that fulfill specific requirements. Please consult with a counselor for questions regarding the Assessment Test if you are a transfer student. 218-262-6774.
- Students enrolling in non-credit continuing education or customized training.
- Students who scored 24 or above on the ACT subtests.
- New students enrolling in seven or fewer credits with no English, mathematics or reading prerequisites do not need to take the assessment immediately, (although it is strongly recommended). These students will need to take the assessment before registering for their eighth cumulative credit.
Assessments - How are the assessment tests used?
- These tests assess your skill level in three foundation areas - Reading, Writing and Math - to see if you are at college level or need to take a pre-college level course first.
- You have been placed into the appropriate level course number in each area according to your test results. These are good courses for you to begin with when building your course schedule. If you feel your tests are inaccurate you may retest, once per semester, in one or all of the above areas. Contact 218-262-6774 for assistance.
- There are three or four levels of the math assessment, so make sure you completed the appropriate level. You may have taken one that was too easy or too difficult, and you may retest if needed.
