Admissions Frequently Asked Questions

What are the admissions requirements?
Students qualify for admission to Hibbing Community College if you have a high school diploma, GED, or will soon graduate from high school.  Students without these documents may also attend Hibbing if they meet Ability to Benefit criteria.

*Certain programs have additional program requirements.
*Being admitted to Hibbing Community College does not guarantee admission to a particular program.

How soon should I apply?
For most programs, we accept applications on a first come-first served basis until the programs are full. We recommend you apply six to nine months in advance of the semester in which you plan to attend. Early application also allows you to register for classes earlier and get started on the financial aid process. It will also give you additional time to find housing, if necessary.

How do I schedule a campus tour?
One of the best ways to learn about Hibbing Community College is to come and see our campus in person.  HCC’s tours help you to envision yourself on our campus through an intake meeting with admissions, a tour with a student ambassador, and often meetings with instructors, coaches, financial aid, disability services, and advisors.

Tours are by appointment Monday through Friday at 11 a.m. Tours may arranged at a different time as available. To schedule a tour call 1-800-224-4422 or 218-262-6774.

When will I hear if I am accepted?
You should get a letter from us two to four weeks after we receive your application. Some programs may have additional admissions requirements. You will be sent a list of those requirements with your acceptance letter.

Do I have to take placement/assessment tests? Yes. Our placement tests in English, reading and math are designed to place you in the classes that best match your abilities. The purpose of the placement tests is to make sure you succeed at Hibbing Community College.

When do I register for classes?
You need to be officially accepted to Hibbing Community College and complete a Student Testing and Registration (STAR) Session in order to register for classes. Students who have completed placement/assessment testing at another Minnesota State College and University should send a copy of their scores to admissions and bring a copy with to the STAR session. New student registration for next fall starts in April and continues throughout the summer. The earlier you are able to do testing, orientation, and registration, the more courses you will have to choose from.

Am I required to attend a STAR Session?
New Student Testing and Registration is mandatory for all students, even if you have attended Hibbing Community College previously.  Students are introduced to campus resources and policies and register for classes with a team of academic advisors. It is mandatory for all new students to participate in new student orientation.

Am I required to attend Cardinal Kickoff?
All students attending a STAR session register for Cardinal Kickoff, a mandatory event for students the week before classes begin. It is expected of all students to attend this kickoff event.

How do I find out about housing?
Hibbing Community College features on-campus apartment-style housing. Each apartment is home to four students and has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen. The apartments are furnished with tables, dressers, beds, a couch, a kitchen table, and all the major appliances, including a dishwasher and a microwave. There is a laundry facility in the building as well. For more information contact our housing manager at (218) 263-2911.
